UAE contributes $20 million to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

NEW YORK (WAM), 3rd JUNE 2023 — The United Arab Emirates have announced a donation of USD 20 million (around AED 73.6 million) to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The agency provides educational, health, relief, and social services for Palestinian refugees. The agency is almost entirely funded by contributions from UN member states.

During a meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Announcement Voluntary Contributions for UNRWA, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh announced the UAE contribution. It will be distributed over the next two-years.

The future of UNRWA is at risk due to the precarious financial situation. “We hope to make the funding more stable and predictable for the Agency with the UAE’s help,” stated Ambassador Nusseibeh. UNRWA plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for millions of Palestinians refugees. It also contributes to regional stability and security, she said.

Before today’s contribution the UAE assistance to Palestine was USD 521 million. USD 119.3 millions through UNRWA during the period of 2018-2023.

UNRWA was founded by UN General Assembly resolution 302 on 8th December 1949.
